What are the scariest ones in your opinion? For me it's the kitchen woman in Alternate Watch and Photoshop Flowey in Undertale.
>>714990486 (OP)Scary only works when you have a good imagination. I lost that somewhere around when I was 11 I believe? That was when first FNAF game took off with ecelebs, I remember downloading a few 3D free fan games and playing them at night and later on shitting myself from anxiety not being able to fall asleep, good times ( I cannot experience that anymore).
Idk if there is actually anything genuinely scary fiction ( as opposite to very scary every day reality ) out there anymore.
>>714990486 (OP)Photoshop a shitty smile on anything and put a vhs filter over it and it would scare you zoomers

I recall a lot of Silent Hill enemies (like the nurses in 2) were meant to fall into this due to their lack of a face, but I feel like those are different enough from the standard human form to not really trigger the creepiness.

>>714993540You can read a story and get something out of it one way or another; people will enjoy it varying degrees. One's enjoyment of horror is almost entirely binary. Either it's scary or it isn't. If it isn't scary then it will just seem stupid.

if you're expecting the horror, it just falls flat.

>>714993540Sturgeon's Law. Singling out the horror genre and pretending other genres like comedy, fantasy and sci-fi don't also just have a handful of gold nuggets in a sea of shit is preposterous. There are a lot of variables to consider when it comes to horror especially since the way some people consume it is pretty cringe like they're looking to prove something by going "I didn't get scared" as if that's the only important thing when it comes to horror. Comedies rarely elicit a laugh out of me personally but that doesn't mean I can't still enjoy them and also think they're good.
Culturally, horror is also in a unique position where to most people if it's "too good" or "too much fun" then it can't be horror because horror is supposed to be gutter trash. Jaws, Misery, Silence of the Lambs, The Sixth Sense, Black Swan and Get Out are perfect examples of this mentality and what do they all have in common with each other? They were all nominated for Best Picture and/or Best Actor/Actress at the Oscars so they get called thrillers instead. Not horror thrillers just simply thrillers. The Exorcist seems to be the only one exempt from this but I've seen people claim that Alien or Aliens isn't one either or basically any great horror comedy like Evil Dead 2 or Shaun of the Dead etc.
>>714993540Modern day horror usually sucks. Horror is best paired with a good setting like historical or sci-fi or apocalyptic. If its in the suburbs or some shitty city it sucks ass and it usually ends up being pretentious to make up for it.

>>715030121>They were all nominated for Best Picture and/or Best Actor/Actress at the Oscars so they get called thrillers instead. This was especially prevalent in the 90s and 2000s because studios thought they could increase rentals and critic approval by labeling their more prestige horror movies as thrillers.
Most people probably aren't aware of this but David Fincher himself and Andrew Kevin Walker (the writer) have both stated many times that they consider Se7en to be a horror film disguised as a thriller and New Line Cinema deliberated over whether or not they should market it as one at first. Their approach to it as a horror movie is why they fought the studio so hard to keep the ending that we got.
Then there's someone like James Cameron who has also always maintained that the first Terminator film is a horror/slasher film and Darren Aronofsky has also said he intended for Black Swan to be a horror film back when he made the press tour promoting its release. He even said the same thing for Requiem for a Dream.
It's the same with vidya like Doom and RE4 where the creators themselves have come out and said repeatedly over the years that they intended for those games to be action games but also horror games at the same time but that's still not good enough for some evidently.

>>714993540Nothing bad with it. There are just more optimal mediums for it. You also have to pick what you actually like in horror. Do you want gore? Do you want a love story but the chick is a ghost? Do you want to discover something weird? Do you even actually want to be scared?
The best medium for it so far I've seen is the short story since it outsources most of the resources you need to construct a scene to the reader, cannot meander and has to pace itself to actually deliver on the horror. It feels like creepypastas had some real potential to get seriously good once their authors got older, but a lot of the time they just move on to other things, and it's kinda a shame.
I've used to read a lot of web horror back in the day. There was some fun shit like
> teens bring a cube full of materials used for X-ray scans to their home and break it down, suffering a predictable fate> some dude gets mailed a fucking gravestone to their flat, leading people to believe that he's actually dead> urbex guy searches for things in a house to be demolished soon and finds an entire room full of increasingly insane notes from his friend who tried exploring it and got stuck in that house forever> a bunch of radio enthusiasts buy some headphones that lead them to discover a hidden military excavation in a nearby phone stationand so on. Not the scariest or most creative things out there, but they're well-made and effective enough. They're also not easily transcribed to the gaming medium, unfortunately. The efficiently terrifying games would probably have you encounter some alternative logic you have to decipher to survive. Things that make total sense in another world, that sort of thing. You can't follow tropes or subvert tropes, you have to do away with tropes entirely, that's the hardest part.
As a guy who's been burned out on the horror genre for awhile, is there anything that's actually , genuinely got you that you would recommend?
Honestly as I've gotten older horror just doesn't hit the same way, the older you get the more media you consume the more you're able to just tune things out. Horror kind of hinges on extremes and the unknown and the more you know and experience it just kind of fades a bit. I've genuinely not played anything in the last 10 years that's done anything for me, and I've been trying a lot of things, but God do I want to relive the days when I was 10 and games made me genuinely jump

Here's our big plan to kill Dracula. You in?" It's my biggest complaint of the movie, because it made all the protagonists look retarded.
On the topic of Dracula, I REALLY wish that adaptations of the story would stop trying to push Dracula and Mina Harker as any sort of couple. Jonathan and Mina have a very lovely and supportive dynamic, but people keep throwing that away for some stupid "forbidden attraction" angle.

>>715045771>most creepypastas have shitty endings because its some 14 year old's first piece of writingI'd say that mostly applies to the popular creepypastas, which only got popular in the first place because of fan games which attracted youtube let's play channels with a similar audience of dumb 14 year olds, which of course means they thought, "Oh, this is what creepypastas are supposed to be."

>>715034158I don't think it's technology that's holding Horror back. If the same devs that make horror slop right now had the competence to make VR games they'd just make the same jumpscare streamerbait garbage in VR
>>715029663Cause it came out like a year and a half ago and there were threads on it enough that jannies started deleting it
Its a good plot (i guess, blanking on a better word) that shows he understands the fundamentals of making the rising action of horror. Good shots, strong visual and auditory design, understands how to build tension without relying on contrivance (almost want to say fuck hitchcock for his 'bomb under the table' metaphor since now every shitty horror writer has the spook just about wrap their hands around the protag's neck from behind them then just fucking disappear for no reason establishing no rules, just fucking with the audience) and knows how to establish effective rules and when to subvert them.
>>715053101Subnautica had the potential to be really scary and it did have its moments but the leviathan behavior despite being streamer bait was a major detriment. The scariest thing about being deep in open ocean is knowing that huge scary and hungry things are everywhere but
>you can't hear it>you can't see it in front of your face until it's right on youyou can't see it at all behind you, or above you, or below you.
The reapers roar to announce their presence, they're visible from a mile away, they're in predictable areas with predictable routes, and they do not immediately kill you when they attack your sub or seamoth.
Below Zero is not even worth mentioning outside of insults of course, it's a travesty that the series had some real potential but the devs took all the worst parts of the original game and highlighted them instead of what was actually fun and scary about it.
>>715044498There are effectively two types of horror people can feel.
The first is nothing more than a primal instinctual response telling you to get away from danger. Alot of the lower brow sort of horror is aiming for this because people just want to feel that instinct sometimes for whatever reason but not everyone enjoys that or really feels thoose instincts as strongly. Plus regardless of how much such a thing affects you, ultimately the rational side of your brain knows that your not actually in any danger, and the feeling is fleeting.
The second emotion horror can invoke in you is a way more deep feeling of true helplessness, its this idea that even with a rational brain and logically working through all possible emotions, something terrible will still happen or has happened and nothing you do can ever stop it. The real world has this all the time, and our choice to express it in art might be some complex way of us learning to cope or deal with it. Most people are scared of death because the concept of disappearing into nothingness with no way to do anything about it is horrifing to people, which is why most major religions are based around the idea of there being something after, which your actions now somehow changing it for the better or worse. Regardless of if you believe in one or not, its clear that theres this human idea of fairness that the universe doesnt hold itself to, and this emotion is just to deal with the unfairness of it all.
Most of the horror that is considered high brow like the exorcist or even something like silent hill 2 manages to invoke both emotions at once. The exorcist is about a scary demon monster on a surface level which ties in the first feeling of fear, but on a deeper level its about faith, questioning the fairness that something so horrible could happen to an innocent child, second guessing if anything in this life really matters, if there really is something after to look forward to.
More horror should do both.
>>715033202>They're also not easily transcribed to the gaming medium, unfortunatelyPretty much it. Old tank controls-fixed (or stiff) camera angle games could control the exact shot you were getting in every single room to completely curate your experience and expectations. When you lose that you lose a lot of the ability to build a proper sense of dread which is why a lot of modern horror has to rely on cheaper bullshit.

>>715063329Funnily enough, Cruelty Squad is a good answer.
There are two levels to this. First, no one can really die here. (almost) Every NPC is canonically immortal due to body restoration being as cheap as a GPU. You can just kill some people over and over again to make their company stocks rise so you can sell them once a better one comes in. You are not an exception. Once you die, you lose your soul, and lose 500 dollars per death until you're demoted to a free reconstruction option that just turns you into some sort of a recombining meat soup. Some doors are locked behind having a soul, and you can recover it in two places: either at the end of the "normal" run or in a secret starting spot by setting resolution to 640x480.
Second, there is a bigger current to this. The world was invaded by three celestial beings since time immemorial, who have undone death and have set the rules for the world's transfer of resources. The game just looks like that because there really is nothing else to do under their influence except killing and accumulating money. "Normal" run has you defeat the Demiurge only to find out that the world beyond is just a bigger, even flatter prison than before. You have to harness death and find a way to replace your soul with a much sharper thing in order to break out. Second ending involved accumulating over 1 million dollars in stocks, finding a weapon that is powered by it and killing a guardian to find yourself at the top of the chain. Yet, you're still the biggest pig in this spiritual slaughterhouse. The "true" ending has you complete every secret level as well to find out that there is a source of all of this, and you travel to some spiritually negative landscape, descend to it and terminate this false worldlife forever before recreating a world here life and death are restored to their normal function ("the golden age"). However, life itself will have to recover for a long, long, long time.

>>715049721The vastness of space is pretty scary. Not in the "I'm going to scream and shit my pants" sense, but in a "I can't even fathom this shit and everything that's out there (and in turn how much nothing there also is) and I feel paralysed by the thought".
Another would be the concept of ego death or turning into an "other". I can accept the idea of death in general, that one's life must come to an end eventually, but the idea of one's life continuing but you becoming something/someone else with no continuity with your current state of mind is somehow really unsettling despite how irrational it sounds when put into words. I mean, it can hardly even happen unless you're somehow hit with total amnesia.

Spookiness is when the big slimy meat monster yells at you and looks all yucky n stuff gross haha

It's between you and your friends to decide if that's the sort of time you want to have. >>715074839Having "sex" with that thing was revolting and kino. I'm sorry you got filtered by it. Go back to being scared about wallpaper or 5th grader art.
>>714993540Horror is just an extremely difficult genre to do right because it rely on a not so common emotion in western society that is fear.
Fear is mainly born from the unknown and in the age of information and mass media where everyone is aware of what is happening at the other side of the world it's hard to make humans fear the unknown, also the widespread of pocket cameras made things like serial killers or cryptids simply disappear in the 21th century.
Horror cinema is probably the medium that nails horror the most because it is both highly immersive yet not under the audience control, this is why a lot of horror movies made cinema like the ring, the thing, exorcist, shining, halloween, elm street.
For example horror in anime is 99% absolutely fucking terrible because the medium inherently too goofy and not immersive enough to convey real horror sensation, the top3 most popular anime are tokyo ghoul, parasyte and another and they are all equally gorefest garbage.
Horror video games do not work because the player has control over the universe, you can't be scared of outlast if you can just pause the game at any point. Something like RE cannot be scary anymore even after 7 reboot because it is too included within an IP people have too much knowledge of.
Horror isn't a bad genre it's just a genre where 95% is bad and 5% if the cream of the crop.
>>715083479The nocturnal visits are the acts of infidelity, becoming a vampire is simply giving over completely to sin with no redemption.

ITT: Games with creepy imagery - my answer is, of course, my peanus weenus :D
hahaha!
a few years ago I saw a video linked here that wasn't a game, but like a mockup or proof-of concept of an analog horror game.
All I remember was first-person turn-based battles against pngs of body horror creatures with photo backdrops of nasty abandoned hallways and rooms.
The UI was kinda like old 80s-90s broadcast TV graphics. Like the kind of panels and numbers you'd see on news and weather stations.
>>714993540Horror has historically been popular so it is inherently going to have significantly more bad than good. Combine that with the fact that it's just as subjective as comedy.

it's weird because you'd think this was targeted solely at godzilla fans, but as one i can't possibly take the idea of a haunted suit seriously
was the suit still haunted when it was doing the funny moon dance? or going 'HEY ANGILA', or outrunning a black hole, or any number of very not-scary things godzilla has been a part of
>>715113987This is what pure horror is. No cheap jumpscares or gratuitous gore. Just pure dread.
edit: thanks for all the likes, internets!
>>715114841You'd think a Godzilla horror would try to build more off of the kind of shit Shin was about/represents, or maybe a horror-focused spin on GMK's take.

>>715115015i've seen twitter artists try their hand at (not really scary but) horror-esque godzilla designs of their own making, and at least they're usually a little cool looking instead of just MS paint-ing over the eyes

I it's not a horror video and just some random house, but are there any games with this aesthetic?

In the right hands Godzilla horror can be very effective but if you have incompetent teens making it then of course you will something that isn't really remarkable
