Scary only works when you have a good imagination. I lost that somewhere around when I was 11 I believe? That was when first FNAF game took off with ecelebs, I remember downloading a few 3D free fan games and playing them at night and later on shitting myself from anxiety not being able to fall asleep, good times ( I cannot experience that anymore).
Idk if there is actually anything genuinely scary fiction ( as opposite to very scary every day reality ) out there anymore.

For intentional uncanny valley? Probably some stuff in horror VNs since it's easier to create a baseline that you can stray away from. I recall a lot of Silent Hill enemies (like the nurses in 2) were meant to fall into this due to their lack of a face, but I feel like those are different enough from the standard human form to not really trigger the creepiness.

Horror is a weird genre to work with because being scared is unpleasant for most people so it's popular but not popular at the same time

Sturgeon's Law. Singling out the horror genre and pretending other genres like comedy, fantasy and sci-fi don't also just have a handful of gold nuggets in a sea of shit is preposterous. There are a lot of variables to consider when it comes to horror especially since the way some people consume it is pretty cringe like they're looking to prove something by going "I didn't get scared" as if that's the only important thing when it comes to horror. Comedies rarely elicit a laugh out of me personally but that doesn't mean I can't still enjoy them and also think they're good.

Culturally, horror is also in a unique position where to most people if it's "too good" or "too much fun" then it can't be horror because horror is supposed to be gutter trash. Jaws, Misery, Silence of the Lambs, The Sixth Sense, Black Swan and Get Out are perfect examples of this mentality and what do they all have in common with each other? They were all nominated for Best Picture and/or Best Actor/Actress at the Oscars so they get called thrillers instead. Not horror thrillers just simply thrillers. The Exorcist seems to be the only one exempt from this but I've seen people claim that Alien or Aliens isn't one either or basically any great horror comedy like Evil Dead 2 or Shaun of the Dead etc.

This was especially prevalent in the 90s and 2000s because studios thought they could increase rentals and critic approval by labeling their more prestige horror movies as thrillers.
Most people probably aren't aware of this but David Fincher himself and Andrew Kevin Walker (the writer) have both stated many times that they consider Se7en to be a horror film disguised as a thriller and New Line Cinema deliberated over whether or not they should market it as one at first. Their approach to it as a horror movie is why they fought the studio so hard to keep the ending that we got.

Then there's someone like James Cameron who has also always maintained that the first Terminator film is a horror/slasher film and Darren Aronofsky has also said he intended for Black Swan to be a horror film back when he made the press tour promoting its release. He even said the same thing for Requiem for a Dream.

It's the same with vidya like Doom and RE4 where the creators themselves have come out and said repeatedly over the years that they intended for those games to be action games but also horror games at the same time but that's still not good enough for some evidently.

Nothing bad with it. There are just more optimal mediums for it. You also have to pick what you actually like in horror. Do you want gore? Do you want a love story but the chick is a ghost? Do you want to discover something weird? Do you even actually want to be scared?
The best medium for it so far I've seen is the short story since it outsources most of the resources you need to construct a scene to the reader, cannot meander and has to pace itself to actually deliver on the horror. It feels like creepypastas had some real potential to get seriously good once their authors got older, but a lot of the time they just move on to other things, and it's kinda a shame.
I've used to read a lot of web horror back in the day. There was some fun shit like
> teens bring a cube full of materials used for X-ray scans to their home and break it down, suffering a predictable fate
> some dude gets mailed a fucking gravestone to their flat, leading people to believe that he's actually dead
> urbex guy searches for things in a house to be demolished soon and finds an entire room full of increasingly insane notes from his friend who tried exploring it and got stuck in that house forever
> a bunch of radio enthusiasts buy some headphones that lead them to discover a hidden military excavation in a nearby phone station
and so on. Not the scariest or most creative things out there, but they're well-made and effective enough. They're also not easily transcribed to the gaming medium, unfortunately. The efficiently terrifying games would probably have you encounter some alternative logic you have to decipher to survive. Things that make total sense in another world, that sort of thing. You can't follow tropes or subvert tropes, you have to do away with tropes entirely, that's the hardest part.

As a guy who's been burned out on the horror genre for awhile, is there anything that's actually , genuinely got you that you would recommend?

Honestly as I've gotten older horror just doesn't hit the same way, the older you get the more media you consume the more you're able to just tune things out. Horror kind of hinges on extremes and the unknown and the more you know and experience it just kind of fades a bit. I've genuinely not played anything in the last 10 years that's done anything for me, and I've been trying a lot of things, but God do I want to relive the days when I was 10 and games made me genuinely jump

That movie really bothered me. Not because of Orlok, but what happens immediately after this scene. The guy's entire family is murdered. Wife. Infant children. Hours later, he has a fucking funeral for them. And then the rest of the "good" guys try and wrangle him in to kill Dracula. And when he's spacing out, and not doing well, they're like, "what's your problem, bro?" He even apologies to them. Then they act surprised when he's left alone for five minutes, and then kills himself.

The exorcist is about a scary demon monster on a surface level which ties in the first feeling of fear, but on a deeper level its about faith, questioning the fairness that something so horrible could happen to an innocent child, second guessing if anything in this life really matters, if there really is something after to look forward to.

Second, there is a bigger current to this. The world was invaded by three celestial beings since time immemorial, who have undone death and have set the rules for the world's transfer of resources. The game just looks like that because there really is nothing else to do under their influence except killing and accumulating money. "Normal" run has you defeat the Demiurge only to find out that the world beyond is just a bigger, even flatter prison than before. You have to harness death and find a way to replace your soul with a much sharper thing in order to break out. Second ending involved accumulating over 1 million dollars in stocks, finding a weapon that is powered by it and killing a guardian to find yourself at the top of the chain. Yet, you're still the biggest pig in this spiritual slaughterhouse. The "true" ending has you complete every secret level as well to find out that there is a source of all of this, and you travel to some spiritually negative landscape, descend to it and terminate this false worldlife forever before recreating a world here life and death are restored to their normal function ("the golden age"). However, life itself will have to recover for a long, long, long time.

Horror is just an extremely difficult genre to do right because it rely on a not so common emotion in western society that is fear.
Fear is mainly born from the unknown and in the age of information and mass media where everyone is aware of what is happening at the other side of the world it's hard to make humans fear the unknown, also the widespread of pocket cameras made things like serial killers or cryptids simply disappear in the 21th century.
Horror cinema is probably the medium that nails horror the most because it is both highly immersive yet not under the audience control, this is why a lot of horror movies made cinema like the ring, the thing, exorcist, shining, halloween, elm street.
For example horror in anime is 99% absolutely fucking terrible because the medium inherently too goofy and not immersive enough to convey real horror sensation, the top3 most popular anime are tokyo ghoul, parasyte and another and they are all equally gorefest garbage.
Horror video games do not work because the player has control over the universe, you can't be scared of outlast if you can just pause the game at any point. Something like RE cannot be scary anymore even after 7 reboot because it is too included within an IP people have too much knowledge of.
Horror isn't a bad genre it's just a genre where 95% is bad and 5% if the cream of the crop.
