Asgore and Toriel divorced over Toriels drinking and abuse. Toriels domestic violence charge caused her to be suspended from teaching for a year and Asriel and Kris slept at the Holidays for several months while the two fought in court. Asgore is a poor battered husband trying to get back with his abuser.
