I am using WW1 because the pictures from that era are nice but say you were born in the UK around 1870 or so. You'd miss the conscription window for WW1. You'd live in the most powerful Empire of the age, guaranteed wife, life completely on the up and up, better work conditions, more money, peaceful times (until WW1 hits, but you wouldn't be sent).
Of course there are positives to modern life but older times were easier for people who appreciate having some structure to it, because society was made to railroad you into the patch. Now we're all just sitting at home getting a bit more schizophrenic every day with the internet and having zero real life contact with each other. Plus back then the prevailing perception was that life and the world were getting better, now it's entirely the opposite.
