Many parents fuck you up enough so you're dysfunctional, but not enough that you can break away with a clear conscience.
I had times where I went no contact, became a hobo, climbed out of it while maintaining no contact and doing everything on my own.
Somehow it didn't really help. I think their influence and the weaknesses they inculcated remain with you. But it was only like 6 months of no contact, so who knows.
Perhaps such parents are a wellspring of pathology, and the longer you stay away from them the more some inner part of you heals and develops...
