Wish there was a sort of Spore successor where you advanced alien civs through stages of development instead of jumping straight to space travel. Stellaris is the closest with having random species be at lower tech levels, but you can't play as such and the gameplay isn't suited for that premise.
Primitive xenos are underrated, and underused outside of the tiresome equivalents of the Blue USB Injuns.
