>Why were the movies such shit?
Western "Hollywood" perspective, combined with the "gotta make it the wider-audiences friendly" attitude + literal 00s blooming feminism activism.
Even if the TS' games took place in the states, just like the OG RE trilogy, they were built by a very Japanese team, before internet as we know it and international projects were really a thing. This is why their worlds took inspiration from the era's popular culture publications (books, movies, music...), but had quite "Japanese" vibe.
They also literally implemented many Jap myths, urban and traditional stuff, into the mood and lore, thus making them extra alien and creepy, especially to Westerners.
TS was also well known for NOT explaining and showing too much at once, because ruining the mystery would make the experience less frightening, and less intriguing.
The next part, "muh wider audiensh!", should be quite self-explanatory.
The large-ass movie goers (this was before Netflix and shit, mind you) wanted quick and easy to digest entertainment, not to feel mortified, sad and confused. The creators also had to somehow jam 6-8 hours of interactive game's content, into a bite-size flick of 2 hours MAX, meaning there was no room for deep symbolism and multilayered lore.
Thus, the plot was altered into what's essentially The Exorcist + Elm Street :
"Evil Christian cult burns witches, one girl is a witch, wants revenge, SH is now literal Hell / purgatory whatev!"
Yes, it's this film where this silly nu-narrative and misconception originates from.
The feminazi stuff is more or less confirmed thing as well.
The asshats behind the movie LITERALLY told the press that the idea of a loving father risking his life to find and rescue his only child and family member sounded "unrealistic and weird", in the mid-00s for fucks sake.
This is why the MC was turned into a lady... but they couldn't figure out a reason to off Sean Bean, so he's now playing a side kick who wanders around.
