Cars of that era had a certain bumper configuration. I don't know what it was called; but it was a piece semi-hard plastic, which created the fake image of continuity between the bumper and the rest of the body. Any car hit above a certain speed would have this part either deformed or broken, which it does not appear to be in the original picture.

Meanwhile, you're going to have a hard enough time keeping the rear bumper on a 1970's american car; and would avoid such stressful activities as touching it, looking at it, or breathing on it. By around 1989, most 1970's american cars had pieces of coat hanger holding up the bumpers (at least here in the rust belt)
