Surai are aquatic marsupials originally native to the Elemental Plane of Water, where they lived on vast leviathans in a commensalistic-to-mutualistic relationship. The "third eye" functions along with several ampullae on their ossicones to provide them with a rudimentary sense of electroreception underwater, though some claim to get impressions from it even when surfaced. They have a complicated lung-and-gill structure that consists of a pair of upper chambers that then route into either their true lungs or out through their gills, depending on whether they're above or below water. Their hair-like tendrils actually developed from lures like those of anglerfish, meaning they can provide very dim illumination out to a very short range.

You might notice that Isüdé (the one in the pom-pom shoes) has smaller feet than the others. The player who doodles the character references did his design first, but later decided that the race looked better with larger, more paddle-like feet for swimming. The four designs on the left are all from the same region of the world, in which the campaign is taking place, while the three characters on the right are from the other three areas in which the race has a significant presence.
