Toriyama didn't focus on them that much, but he had a soft spot for them. The whole background lore of them coming from another realm being revealed all the way back in Granolah's arc, Piccolo's orange form having something to do with Namekian trees (I assume it's the same ones Dende mentioned), Daima revealing they're from Demon Realm, explaining why they moved to other places, and introducing a new set of dragon balls that are different from the rest (Not just having 3 instead of the usual 7, but also everyone knowing where they are, but nobody can get them because of Tamagamis), and Neva himself being a really powerful magician, and the reason Goku got SS4... Unfortunately with Toriyama dead they'll probably be sidelined again...
