tl;dw: tit-for-tat works, but forgiveness has to exist for the cycle to be broken and actual progress to happen. Strategies that take advantage of pushovers die the moment pushovers stop existing since they can't take advantage of those that strike back. In the end the only survivors are those that strike back but don't hold grudges.
