You are not necessarily a failed artist. You merely had wrong ideals that lead you down a wrong path. What you did would never work for anyone so it's not necessarily reflective of a personal flaw, but a worldview flaw. If you want to be a legit anime artist you need to - refine your tastes and be part of the culture, watch anime, read manga, read VNs and LNs, listen to anime music, watch interviews and other adjacent content. Otherwise you're just flailing around in the dark, hoping that your pen strokes somehow hit the aesthetic developed through countless hours of purposeful refinement. It's like learning a language but never engaging with native texts and being content to speak in some pidgin ebonics variant of it.
