They brought JJ on because he "Revived" star trek. They wanted to do the same thing and used his ideas explicitly. Kathleen is responsible for hiring and relying on him but he is absolutely key, just as much as Rian's bizarre choices led to JJ desperately scrambling to try to "fix" them and making it much much worse.
