You have to understand that small arms sales are based on an entire "monkey see, monkey do," game of telephone. The military adopts the cheapest shit imaginable for the lowest common denominator. Then cops follow their lead because cops are wannabe soldiers. Then civilians follow their lead because civilians are wannabe cops. Glock basically ruined handguns by selling plastic striker-fired crap with no real safety mechanisms at rock-bottom prices to government agencies. Government contracts are the best form of advertising for guns, because people just blindly accept that "hurr it's what the cops and militaries are all using so it must be good." It's basically the gun industry cheaping out, and then convincing their customer base that the newer, unsafe product is actually superior to the older, safer ones that are more expensive to manufacture. The catch is that they're going to sell you the cheap new thing for the same price as the old thing, because whoops we don't make the old thing anymore due to lack of demand. :^)
