To my knowledge there has never been any direct contact between humans and NHI, the stories about Eisenhower meeting with them are bs.
The truth, as far as I can see it (I can't go into specifics, but I'm in a position to know things) is that we simply don't know. At best they seem to not care about us, at worst they seem to be openly antagonising and hostile at times.

There have been recovered craft but so far in decades we haven't been able to do jack shit in terms of reverse engineering anything actually groundbreaking. Sure, some ideas have been taken from them, but actually understanding how they work? nada
