I remember the test having questions like "count the number of isometric blocks" where the catch is seeing if the kid is smart enough to account for the blocks that aren't visible. First grade.

GATE itself was nothing. From grades 1-7 it amounted to an extra book report you could do once in a while or a MENSA-approved card game. From 7 on, it was just optional field trips that require you to still make up the classes you missed, therefore almost nobody went on any of them. It offered no real advantage and obviously had some other purpose, maybe slowing the smart kids down enough for parents to not cause a ruckus.
