I do occasionally find them. Shadow Cocoon was a good example of "looked like garbage, but wasn't". And although it's an old one, Reality Zero Layer was a good example of "looking like shit, but damn, this is actually decent".
But no, I don't think I have a system other than a tendency towards certain game types. I take in a pretty broad range of games and try to give most things at least a chance. But I will not try rhythm, sports, or multiplayer games at all. So I haven't tried stuff like Sinker Sound or Dead Like Disco or Unbeatable because I know have no interest in such things.
Survival Horror and Detective Games are probably the ones I go for the most. And Point and Click. This one has been mentioned by absolutely no one and was a pretty good Jazz Jackrabbit/Looney Tunes style parody:

I'm also really good at using the steam search engine, so my searches are more efficient than other people's because I don't run into problems with page refreshes and so on and can really dig deep.
