I was thinking the same thing. Although Renoir always frames his statements in the context of the painter's wellbeing, he inadvertently makes an argument regarding the wellbeing of the painted beings who live in the canvas.
Basically, the only way to avoid dooming all these painted people is to either leave them the fuck alone.
Or even better, just don't create new life in the first place.
Remember when Sophie said she didn't want to have kids:
>I'm not selfish enough to bring others into our doomed world. I know we are not many to think like this right now... and it destroyed the relationship with the one I loved the most.
Renoir probably considers painting new life just as dangerous, irresponsible, and cruel as having children in a doomed Lumiere.
He must believe that these canvas worlds are unsustainable, and that the painters, as flawed gods, will only bring suffering to these people.
I just wish there was at least ONE line in the game from Renoir that confirms this is what he thinks, because it's such a great parallel with the beginning of the game.
