Not to mention it has worked since the dawn of human legend. It's timeless for a reason and you can change so much of it to keep stories engaging while still keeping that narrative backbone. People like heroics, people love romance. It is the perfect marraige of two of the most written about topics in human fiction. Make the big bad scary and you have a trifecta of action, romance and horror. When you look at older movies, especially action blockbusters, they pull from those 3 elements. You may have the Godfathers or the Donnie Darkos, but people still remember the action movies of the 70-80s or the block buster epics of the 60s
