It's not that the references are too obscure, they're almost bottom of the barrel, it's that it's just boring. It's not funny to randomly say "just like the time I did XYZ" then show a boring cutaway "gag" of some washed up celeb doing something surreal, but everyone talking like they're having an awkward argument at all times.
