That's been the case for multiple platform fighters where the dev seemed to have self sabotaged their products

Rivals 1 and Slap City are the two games I know of that didn't shoot themselves in the foot in any way, and while Rivals maintained a niche community, workshop helped boost the popularity of the game quite a lot. Meanwhile Slap City had its time as FOTM only to get murdered by Ultimate's announcement. It's truly a cursed genre.
