>Not everyone who claims Shadow and Maria are siblings are doing it deflect from another ship.
Claiming Shadow and Maria are actual siblings is objectively inaccurate. Do you know why? Because they always put the word "like" before it. That word means it is not literal. Shadow is not on her family tree. Shadow is separated from the rest of the Robotnik family on Sonic Channel's relationship. They do not call each other sister or brother. Shadow is excluded when Maria and Gerald talk about their real relatives in Shadow Gens. If Shadow were truly Maria's brother and Gerald's son, why did Maria say "my sister" instead of "our sister"? Why did Gerald say "I have two sons. I guess you haven't met them"? Why did Gerald note that Shadow and Maria have an "instant mutual friendship"? Even he viewed them as friends. They only ever call each other friends.
The same terms are used to describe Silver/Blaze's relationship and Shadow/Maria's relationship.
弟のような - Otōto no yōna
兄妹のような - kyōdai no yōna
no yōna - like/similar to
If it was literal they would not use no yōna. Almost nobody calls Blaze Silver's sister because it's understood by people as simply describing the dynamic.
>Understanding the real Shadow does not mean forcing everyone to see it as a romance
You misunderstand. I don't want it seen ONLY as a romance because it's not. Shadow and Maria's bond is nuanced. My aim here is to get people to stop acting like people are crazy proshippers for acknowledging that there are romantic elements to their bond, and to discourage them from calling Maekawa or other officials "freaks" for enjoying it. I'm very tired of seeing them harassing people who don't even speak English into deleting their accounts.
To make this change, I believe I have to force the issue and vocally discourage people from taking the sibling relationship literally, to counteract this behavior and to help them realize it was always meant to be taken figuratively.
