In GW1 they were the first guys you met post-searing that showed up across the Shiverpeaks offering food and aid and even going as far to offer refuge in their homeland for anyone that wanted to escape the blasted ruins. That they turn out to be blood thirsty cultists was the original rug pull in the series, before they started doing it all the time. Up until that point they were righteous dudes with cool iconography and badass paladin armor that everyone wanted.
