you can make a Starship Enterprise all you want with your pile of grey bricks, but you gotta have that crew to fly it (or um... stand next to it) and for that you need Lego to make those minifigs

and if Lego gave us Link in a $5 polybag, we could build the dang tree ourselves, but Lego profit was only $2.50 instead of $250.

it's why Lego has shifted to more-accurate hair pieces and special-molded accessories. so your custom-made cobbled-together character looks like garbage if it's not accurate.
