I just think that because they release so many products now they can't playtest them anymore. Like MaRo used to say they playtested mainly for limited and standard, the other formats were too big with too many cards so they didn't playtest for them and used ban instead. But since 2017 I don't even think they playtest for standard anymore. They missed a 2 cards combo in Kaladesh, then you had the whole 2019-2020 period. I remember one of their article about Ikoria design where they said the card that came back the more during the balancing discussion wasn't any of the companions but Dirge Bat. They missed the cards that broke every formats and got a card banned in vintage before the rule change but were busy with a card that barely saw any standard play.
