I just think that because they release so many products now they can't playtest them anymore. Like MaRo used to say they playtested mainly for limited and standard, the other formats were too big with too many cards so they didn't playtest for them and used ban instead. But since 2017 I don't even think they playtest for standard anymore. They missed a 2 cards combo in Kaladesh, then you had the whole 2019-2020 period. I remember one of their article about Ikoria design where they said the card that came back the more during the balancing discussion wasn't any of the companions but Dirge Bat. I built a "red multiplayer prison" deck once. Meekstone, Smoke, Uphill Battle to slow down enemy creatures, then Repercussion + Earthquake for as much as I could fit. I had no creatures, so I would only eat Earthquake damage once, while everyone else got hit multiple times. My playgroup banned that deck after a single game.

Alternatively, combine Varchild's War-Riders with Aether Flash, so the Survivors die instantly. If you add Repercussion to that, the opponent will take (2 x cumulative upkeep) damage every turn. Pyroclasm, Steam Blast, and even Tremor can also clear the way, as can Bloodfire creatures from Apocalypse (Dwarf and Kavu especially).
