He kinda sucked, the whole thing was just "Youre not the REAL VENOM, you're a fucking loser who can't do shit even with his powers LOOLOLOLOL" and he constantly jobbed, got ripped out of the symbiote, got insulted and berated by the symbiote, and character wise is probably the whole reason some people now think Venom was a dumb villain who just runs around screaming about eating brains and has no intelligence, because that's how he was often portrayed in the symbiote

This was explained as like, the symbiote overpowered his apparently weak brain and just let its base urges run rampant while he was locked inside being its bitch
