Not really a dumb thing, but the chainmail on the marine wearing mk1 armor in this kit is very, very obviously sculpted by poking holes in the modeling clay with a needle. I had a weird epiphany when I noticed that, it made me instantly aware that I'm holding something a hobbyist just like me from thirty years ago made with their hands.
