I think death drive is more like some kind of subconscious realization that all the problems, worries, pains, bad memories, etc didn't exist until you were born and there's sort of a silent acknowledgement that in some cases the only real way to escape from all those painful sensations is to once again return to non-existence. This is part of the pain drive.

I've seen a lot of suicide videos from the ukraine war. It does seem that at a certain point when you are damaged enough to be in a sufficient amount of pain that most peoples fear of death kind of vanishes in preference for stopping the pain. I've seen people blowing themselves up with grenades, using razorwire to cut their own throats as well as knives, and of course the classic self inflicted gunshot wound. A lot of times they've had limbs blown off or they've been shot but occasionally you see people who don't look wounded just sort of give up, drop to their knees and shoot themselves. I've read stories from WW2 where German defenders on the Eastern front would stand on the top of trenches solely so that the enemy snipers would shoot them dead.

I think when you get right down to it the best way to alleviate a disproportionate fear of death is to expose yourself to more hardship and pain.
