I think it's a holdover from the dumb fucking discourse that surrounded Undertale, and its Genocide route in particular.

A lot of people really did just take Sans Flowey and Chara's dialogue super literally, as though the game really was criticizing YOU for choosing to play the Genocide route. People didn't really get that if Toby Fox wrote an entire separate storyline predicated on you doing the opposite of what the game diegetically tells you to do, then the game did, in fact, diegetically tell you to do the things required to activate that storyline. Toby Fox did intend for us to play the Genocide route. If he didn't, he wouldn't have put it in the game.
