I think it could be easily fitting in Rogue Trader, unlike in Fantasy games, if this was a vanilla, built-in feature with a slightly more work put into it. Companions you don't take on a planet with you would just be in mission control providing assistance over vox. All that really needs to be done is to restrict them in areas where they obviously won't be able to contact you and rewrite some dialogue to be more ambiguous so they don't always talk like they are with you on the ground.
Your companions could be simply talking heads like in nuXcom or Darktide. Hell, when you are scanning planets they show up like this already anyway.
