In the Russian mind which is heavily influenced by slave-master mentality, a "volunteer" does not exist. Soldiers either needs to be forced to fight or paid to fight. The idea of someone fighting for ideals is absurd to them, they simply cannot comprehend that people would willingly fight them so they come to the "conclusion" that they must be mercenaries because why would anyone hate Russia?

In their mind it's only the western governments that hate Russia and all citizens in those western countries love Russia and hate their own government.
