New characters allow you to radically alter mechanics and playstyles while still having the safe option of the main hero. If Dante strays too far from established gamefeel, he stops being Dante.
Even with like DMC4, Nero plays relatively similar to Dante, but if they just gave Dante a demon arm with a grapple hook move and various grabs, I'd bet my kidney half the people here would be crying "Lame gimmick, I wanted another nunchaku". And then they'd have to decide whether to keep the arm going forward, at the potential expense of other mechanics like style switching, etc. And that's important; there's a button economy and DMC by this point is so dense with moves that it's difficult to fit in more gimmicks than Dante already has. (They can, however, expand on existing gimmicks; you can potentially give Dante 8 styles with the current setup and DMC3 on Switch proves he can have up to 10 weapons at once)
Also, if a character isn't well-received or their gimmick is too difficult to expand upon, they're easier to write out.
V's understandably polarizing, but I think ultimately I'd prefer they experiment and trying something fresh rather than risk stagnating. Like for DMC6, they should revamp Lady or add a wizard or some shit.
>Nintendo has be using Mario and Link for decades and nobody is tired of them.
Not the most apt comparison, since those series add radically different gimmicks on each entry to stay fresh, ie Zelda going from a dungeon crawl to a survival type game with BotW. If DMC6 went open world and added vehicles, how open would you be to that?
