I like how this episode contrasts Nyaan and Machu's personal lives & their respective upbringing. Machu is a privileged, selfish kid that has the whole world offered to her on a silver platter, but her family is socially absent (Ep. 3 spells it out that her father is a dipolmat of sorts), and thus trying to rebel to get attention. Meanwhile, Nyaan is a trench baby struggling to make ends meet and living on the fringes, worrying that every sucessive tomorrow is possibly going to be her last day.
And yet, Machu is jealous of her. The scenes of Machu with her mom that contrast the scenes of Nyaan with the dealer she interacts with makes it a cool juxtaposition. It broke my heart that Machu Is all set up to go to college/university, with a wealthy background, enrolled in an elite high school and cram school, but she's rebelling against it and not wanting to go... While Nyaan wants to so she can get a better living standard, but is a poor refugee who has to work multiple times as hard just to have the chance to take the entrance exam.
Also, the sequence where Nyaan is wrapping gyoza dumplings with Shuji, while they are both enjoying their company in an intimate sense, while Machu brought some pre-made food for him is an intersting way to showcase that the two gals are effective foils to each other. But while 'The Witch from Mercury' has it where Suletta and Miorine are great foils to one another because they are effectively opposites - but that just helps them grow together and become their best selves - this series is showcasing a different angle that these two idiots are going to potentially become rivals and are possibly going to hate their guts.
