Where it gets complicated is that Toby's attempt to drive home the message of Genocide is to have an evil (You) come out to lecture you. The whole idea is that (You) are "The demon that comes when you call its name" (literally entering your name into an RPG screen), but because of the narrative confusion created by having (You) stare at the screen and go "HAHA WE DID ALL THIS FUCKED UP EVIL SHIT WASN'T THAT GREAT", it caused a lot of people to miss the entire point and blame the actions of (You) in genocide route on a purely headcanon entity people call "Chara".
Thankfully, Toby seems to have learned as has gone out of his way to remove ANY ambiguity on who's doing the Weird Route bullshit in Deltarune, but people are still stupid as fuck and try to apply their retarded headcanons to DR.
