Semites were all over the place, fren. The Akkadians took over Mesopotamia about 4400 years ago, taking over the Sumerian civilization, and relegating their language to a ritual role.
I don't believe the jews are the originators of the knowledge I and others pursue. In fact, I think some jews were initiated quite late, around the mishnaic era, but they had the virtue of documenting a lot of it in a very clear manner, given the right perspective. The Sefer Yetzirah is very obvious, and the Zohar is a riot. But, if you ask me, the jews had made very early in their history a pact with some very unkind entity which turned some them into rather unpleasant people, let's say.
I could be wrong. I'm not an initiate myself. Working on it.
