You spend a very long time talking to Count Zachary about your new plans that you just came up with of having a new road built to connect Kent with a more central market. You went to a market once as a child, what was it called again...
"Silkmoth Plaza.", says Count Zachary, almost reading your mind, "It is the largest market in the region. They call it that because... well, the place is infested with silkmoths. That is what we get from planting too many mulberry trees.
"Do they produce a lot of silk there?"
"Yeah, it is the region that produces almost all the silk the kingdom uses. Everyone buys silk there to make dresses, like the ones most of the ladies here are wearing. The moths adapted well to the region. It is hard to transplant them elsewhere, though, they don't adapt well. I think the climate conditions, the humidity and the temperature are precisely what they need. Most of the money of the county comes from taxing silk. The majority of the villages pays only food tithe, but silk sells well everywhere."
"And who rules such splendid place?"
"That's the thing, the place is a Merchant Republic. A bunch of merchants founded the city and the founding charter says that seven families will take turns leading the town. No nobles. Still, since they are in my county, I tax them. You can't really avoid taxes, even if you found a whole city to do just that.", he laughs heartily.
"And they just accepted?"
"Well... no. We had a small war. But it was in the times of my grandfather! Today it is all water under the bridge, and they don't mind the low taxes. It is just 10%."
"Fascinating! I'd love to have a road built to them!"
"Well, roads take a lot of work to build... we can't quite spare the manpower right now... but that's an idea! Let's talk to one of the good fellows that runs that city, Sir Ferdinand. He is over there."
The two of you then go talk to sir Ferdinand.
"Sir Ferdinand! This bright young lady here just had an idea of building a road from your city to hers! Let me introduce you to Lady Alita of Kent, our newest baroness!"
"Ah! The tales of your brave defense of Kent Pass already reached my ears! It is a privilege to finally get to know you. Tavian is a lucky man!"
"Do you know my husband?"
"Yes, yes! He's been in our markets many times. To buy, to sell...", he was going to say something else but stopped himself.
"But Roads, right? Well, one big road. Well, if you could find the funding, I could find the workers. But I heard your vill... sorry lady, it is new to me, your Barony is... huh... broke?"
> "Not for long, we have plans to expand mining greatly soon."
> "I assure you Sir Ferdinand, our finances are on point, I will have the funding by next year."
> "It is true but, a well off fellow like yourself sure wouldn't mind extending us a small loan..."
