It was the last gen that tried to innovate in anything, I agree. You had devs with sixth gen sensibilities now unshackled by PS2 hardware limitations trying their hand at games like Dead Rising or Mass Effect or the original Assassin's Creed, meanwhile with Wii and its emulation you could have access to every previous Nintendo console thanks to its emulation. Eight and Ninth Gen consoles are really just trying and failing at doing PS3 games still, but with shinier graphics and somehow worse gameplay.
