What should I pick here?

The story is the main reason to pick up both games. Don't forget you have like another 30h of lore in GFL2 inside the Dusty Memories/Journal section of the Server Room.
That said, GFL1 hasn't aged very well so I wouldn't really recommend picking it up unless you really like the gameplay, otherwise just read everything on the cutscene interpreter.

I'll say that the story is at the start fairly slow and not much happening. Ch5 and 5.5 are where it picks up, and Ch8.5 and Ch10 are the first mindblowing ones IMO.
