I used to love the series. Adored it. 1 is a fantastic space opera RPG with a decent cast, an intriguing story, and is dripping with atmosphere.
2 is an oddity in that the greater story is sidelined for character drama and fleshing out the universe. Don't care much for the Gears-style change to the gameplay, but it was functional for what it was.
3 pains me. Combat feels good with the modular weapon/weight system, but the AI is poor and most combat segments are flawed arena-style rooms with innumerable enemies until the plot dictates you've killed enough.
3's plot is also infuriating. I don't care about spacekid, Ceberus is a writer's pet plot device and can do anything and anything required, Shepard's ridiculous PTSD, every single fucking mission having an annoying and pointless ticking clock element... such a disappointment, man.
For example: on Tuchanka, Artimec Wing is flying in to the Reaper while Shepard and the Krogan convoy is on their way to the Shroud; they stop because the road is out (despite the convoy being rovers and this not presenting a problem). One of the fliers is struck by a laser and JUST SO HAPPENS to careen thousands of meters *right* into the convoy -- this is already an insanely low probability event -- and Shepard responds by yelling that this is a dangerous area and the convoy should get out of here. What about the road being out? The road crumbles and it means nothing. Why is it dangerous? The event was one-in-a-million, but the plot dictates that the player needs to feel the urgency of the task and to not think too much on any one thing. When you zoom out and divest yourself of what the game wants you to feel, most of the events and reasons crumble under the briefest scrutiny.
Everything involving Cerberus is an abomination; an abortion; an affront to all that is rational. Fuck me, I hate Mass Effect 3's plot, though admittedly I don't mind the DLCs.
