If you're coming off of Chaos Theory, play the next gen version first. Old gen is very much just Chaos Theory 1.5 mechanically, even if it was made by a different team from CT (and is thus more of a sidegrade than anything else). Narratively, if you care about such a thing, it's weird: the pre-rendered cutscenes shown in both versions were made to fit the old gen story (Sam looks like his PS2 self), but the canon version of events and the one where the antagonists have more personality (as in, at all) is the new gen one.
