I think that's kind of overblown, everyone always cites Prime, who is a problem but is still trying to have the vehicle mode bits all over, and Galvatron, who's design is meant to look like it doens't transform traditionally by design.
Everyone else generally evokes their vehicle modes and have lots of bits of it all around
I like how AoE isn't trying to just go for vaguely alien humanoid shapes like the early movies, and tries to give the robot modes themes. It feels more in line with how mecha design works for JP properties(though if I was to be blunt, I don't think they're as cool as mecha). Hound is a big and bulky like his alt-mode, Drift clearly has his car parts arranged to look like samurai armor, Crosshairs has his car hood shaped into a trenchcoat.
In general the movie designs always play up emphasizing all the hydraulics and pipes and other mechanical bits you'd see inside a car in their design. It's not really accurate since it's way more than what would be in a car, but the tricky thing is in reality a body is really skinny. The toys/art treats them as thicker than they'd be in reality most of the time.
Bumblebee movie designs were hit or miss for me. Bee himself is a great update, Blitzscream was cool if a bit wonky, I never thought Dropkick was any good and Shatter is ok, heavily carried by being a fembot. The cybertron designs are fine but feel too chunky since they're heavily cobbled together from the same design. Optimus is cool, though I wish we got to see the AoE Evasion look in true G1 colors. I think that would've made a cool look for him.
