Learning about Missingno. from another kid was cool. I met him on the playground, started talking about Pokemon and it ended up with us challenging each other. Went to his house, and he had a full team of level 100s. After he beat me, we hung out playing the game and he told be about Rare Candy duplication and Missingno. Then went home and tested it out with my brother. Felt crazy seeing it actually work, especially with how bizarre Missingno and the sequence to find it is. Things like the screen hanging extra long as the battle starts (actually overwriting memory it turns out), and the Pokemon over level 100 added to it.
Stuff wasn't a total mystery for long though, since Pokemon strategy guides were pumped out everywhere. I even had a guide that was so lazy it mixed in Japanese Pokemon names. Spent a long time trying to find the secret rare "Betobeton" in the Pokemon Mansion. Turns out that's just the Japanese name for Muk. But yeah, even with strategies guides, not every kid had them and they still got a lot from talking to other kids (especially the ones with guides).
