And this was 23 years ago.
Honestly I wouldn't mind if games kept around this level of detail and visual quality if it meant they released in similar time frames.
I mean Gothic 2 came out like 1,5 year after the first game, and it's like 3 times bigger. Utterly unthinkable nowadays. You'd be lucky to get a sequel to a game within 6-8 years.
