Watthana Nakhon is right along the SRT East Line, which runs from Bangkok to the Cambodian border. The train can get very crowded with market vendors transporting their goods. I found people in Sa Kaeo province to be friendly and easygoing. It's along the traditional backpacking corridor from Bangkok to Cambodia, but these days white tourists only care about luxury living and not about seeing the country, so your presence as a traditional budget backpacker attracts a fair bit of positive attention. Of course, with the Cambodia-Thailand hostilities, Aranyaprathet is probably looking like a ghost town atm.

Lam Narai has lots of traffic along the main roads, too much for my liking. Easy to take daytrips by train to Pa Sak Jolasid and other interesting spots nearby. Restaurant selection is meh. Some decent scenery in the area. The town parks have good fitness trails. Expect to deal with dogs if you are on foot. IME the dogs were only protective, not malicious.

In what way would spending untold billions on a canal benefit the Thai people or strengthen the Thai monarchy? In fact, it would degrade Thai sovereignty in the same way that Panama and Egypt experienced when their respective canals became essential to world trade. A transpeninsular cargo railroad may be in the works, however.
