it's a classic must-read to me, but I believe people were upset about the author deliberately choosing to not write them have intercourse in the end, as said since the beginning in the manga and then anime adaptation for whatever reason
it very obviously would have happened with such an intimate relationship, but there is the small benefit of not barring such a story from all readers
