d20 vs d20?

I havent played frostgrave, but thats what it is in rangers. I like it, gets a lot of calcuations in one roll. bit swingy, but thats the fun. and you can usually get sitiational bonuses if you are inventive enough. group combat being the obvious one, but doing skill checks to climb to get a high advantage at range, or situational shit like knocking down the supports of a building can really make play pretty dynamic and tactical.
But I can see some not liking the swingyness. I thought it was ok, since you usually move more then 1 character at a time so actions even out.

cant you only have 1 ally each if you have 3 rangers?
I also ran it once with 2 others as well, but I was a referee, so it was 2 rangers and 4 allies. But I might be remembering the limit wrong.

As a side note, I liked playing nearly paperless using dice to record health and small dice to show if a unit has activated.
