If you want an easy way to check, try replacing it's/its in the sentence with she's/her (or he's/his). If the new form has no apostrophe, your it form shouldn't have one either.

So like
under it's/its spell > under her spell, no apostrophe.
It's/its late > She's late, use apostrophe.
