Not (entirely) related, but black and white reminded me to glance through the manual again. It's full of concept art by Metzen and Samwise for things, they're all also crammed full of details that wouldn't have been feasible in 3D for cutscenes or unit models. Layers upon layers, spikes everywhere, cloth, tubes. A lot of work had to go into taking these ideas and making them actually work for the game and the people who were doing that seem to have had better aesthetic sensibilities than the ones who went on to make SC2.
The concept art is cool, but it doesn't feel like Starcraft.
