Not to mention the soundtrack, you could copypaste SC2 soundtrack into any high fantasy generic rpg and you wouldn't notice any difference.

>>716016438The story is absolutely bad. Splitting it up into a needless trilogy that took forever to complete (the game was pretty much already dead by the time Legacy of the Void even came out) was bad. The gameplay was........ okay. I know SC2 has its fans, but it certainly wasn't the "Chess 2.0" that Blizzard was hoping it would be following Brood War. SC2 was just okay overall, hindered in large part by its single player mode and redeemed somewhat by its multiplayer, but overall it didn't surpass BW. And keep in mind, this was right about the time that MOBAs were taking off. I won't blame SC2 for "killing" the RTS genre, but it certainly failed to save it. SC2 needed to be a grand slam to save RTS as a whole, and it wasn't.... and we see the result of that now where MOBAs took over the RTS genre
>>716015291No, the original Terran tech was a lot more gritty even if the proportions left you wondering how they fit inside and operate the armor. It's too much like Starcraft 2, and the Protoss in the remaster are too jacked. The High Templar's portrait is way less creepy in the remaster, and fans had to twist Blizzard's arm to make his eyes red again.
>>716016151So go on the offense then and destroy all the zerg forces.
>>716002010Ship classifications don't make sense and PISS me the fuck off
>>716018656>the Protoss in the remaster are too jackedIt's more that they're too exposed and visibly show skin where the original was hidden by shadow and low resolution. And neither of these look like the zealot in-game, who was either a tiny guy with two knives, a weird splayed-out guy, or a green-skinned ayy depending on if you go by the sprite, the wireframe, or the portrait.
I might be talking out of my ass, but I think a lot of SC1's visual charm a result of the limitations of late 1990s 3D tools and if blizzard had the power back then, it'd have looked more like SC2 or SCR does now.

I like how Corsair's line "it is a good day to die" is also a cheat code from War 2. I know it is a reference to Star Track, but still.
>>716020172The Protoss in the remaster art look closer to SC2 than original in their physique. They're definitely thicker compared to the thin boi in the original. You can look at Fenix in the cutscene "Fall of Fenix" where he's a thin boi, but his cinematic appearance looks nothing like his portrait. So inconsistent appearance isn't that new of a problem in Starcraft but certain parts remained consistent like the Protoss' physique. Tassadar in his cutscene when he detonates his channeled energy gives another good view of the thin boi limbs. Speaking of that cutscene, the Mutalisks still use their acid attack that Blizzard changed to the glaive wurm during development.
do you seek knowledge of time travel?
>"No discussion of the terran battlecruiser is complete without mention of the legendary Yamato cannon, a devastating plasma weapon with enough firepower to decimate cities. Mounted on the ship's prow, the big gun draws its intense power from the ship's power core, and then uses an intense magnetic field to focus a controlled nuclear explosion into a cohesive beam of energy. The cannon is so massive that it requires its own conversion generator and a dedicated fire-control station manned by nearly 100 gunnery specialists."

Then its all mush now, a nondescript soundstage of random noise. Literally the only sound from SC2 I liked was the roach squealing as it dies.
I fucking loved the terran attack sounds in SC, everything sounds so meaty and heavy, the marine rifles, the goliath autocannons, the siege tank barrages, the poofy vulture grenades, you really feel you are fucking your enemy up. I loved how it proudly wore its influences from Alien and Starship Troopers on its sleeve and that somehow made it more of a unique thing than trying to hide it.
And its incredible how they managed to have just the right amount of cartoony of WC3 too, despite adding more to it. The artstyle and visuals were just so distinct and fitting. Very stylized yet very believable, not trying to be overtly "realistic" but taking itself very seriously and without any irony poisoning, but still having that lighthearted tone of someone who really enjoyed making it and able to slip in a joke here and there without being forced. SC1 sprites as well also have a weird rubbery/latex look to them that makes them oddly feel more realistic or like from a movie. SC2 are way to mean and bug looking which isn't what the zerg are.
Also funny how you bring up irony because I think that's another point in how irony is used. SC2 I feel used to much irony in general. Case in point with
>>715995889 how they just make him a complete drunk instead of just lightly hinting at it like in SC1. Zerg in SC1 had just the right amount and most of it was done in the music. >>716044394Not (entirely) related, but black and white reminded me to glance through the manual again. It's full of concept art by Metzen and Samwise for things, they're all also crammed full of details that wouldn't have been feasible in 3D for cutscenes or unit models. Layers upon layers, spikes everywhere, cloth, tubes. A lot of work had to go into taking these ideas and making them actually work for the game and the people who were doing that seem to have had better aesthetic sensibilities than the ones who went on to make SC2.
The concept art is cool, but it doesn't feel like Starcraft.

And the 40k "influence" feels very strong in some of it.
>>716045184The thing people don't understand about the evolution of the Blizzard RTS games is how they evolved and improved between each one. SC1 wasn't just them going "Lets make a scifi RTS!" because they where literally doing that when players said it was garbage. They then scraped the entire thing and went in with a new mindset of what needs to improve and experimenting with new concepts. WC3 was the same thing where they came in with a "What did work, and what new things could work or we could try?" If you look at the development of SC2 though they did not have that mindset. They started off remaking SC1 in their new engine and then slowly making minor adjustments because they didn't want to make the game too different from the original. They didn't want to actually do something new or to really try and fix that many of the major issues SC1 or WC3 had, the goal was to try and copy it as much as they could.

Many of the main design decisions were absolutely last-minute changes, like the addition of upkeep (suggested by WoW artists) to stop the game from being a WC2-style spamfest.
>>716045184>poor balance >years of stale meta>Too many gimmick abilities >full priced expansions >story sucked and ruined a lot of characters I actually really liked WoL when it first came out all issued aside, but heart of the swarm practically killed my interest in the series.

>>716067958>used to believe high templars were useless, now i used a lot of them in my play thoughs(you) me when you realize how good putting reavers into shuttles is
>>716081073Nexon got the bid.
>>716049620Yes, I know, so was Halo.
The point is more that the original creators were obviously nerds and then normalfags ruined the series.
my favorite ums maps are:
atomic madness
elements rpg
test of survival
>>716044416>>716044189I think CnC base building is faster too but doesn't scale as efficiently. Also resource acquisition usually comes down to 1-2 trucks per mineral/tiberium field.
On the other hand cnc has uncapped unit numbers and engineers would be a nightmare for literally any other RTS player in the game.
>>716015291I still can't see original Mengsk as anything but wearing red headphones over his right ear
Gave him proper "I am personally running this rebel militia" rather than just "haha I've got a not!nazi flag right behind me"
>>715997464>think he's the coolest guy ever as a kid>looks like a caveman with a unibrow
>>716044889The Brood War opening has a special place in my heart. Big reason why Alexi and Dugalle are my favorite characters despite being evil as fuck.
>>716083773Where do you get headphones that comically big
>>716083483>atomic madnessHaven't played this one.
>elements rpgClassic.
>test of survivalMore like Test of Patience.
>>716045623I miss decal Marines.
Only UED forces should be proper military.
>>7160495695x5 just means i can hear you loud and clear over the radio, 5 bars of reception as it were
>>716084181I think atomic madness didn't gain popularity because it showed up when hydra rancher was really big. you have a bunker and use a civ to pick a unit to spawn, and have to defeat other players' bunkers. it was fun making massive muta bombs
Virgin zerg
>the hive cluster is under Attack!!!!
Virgin terran
> your base is under attack!!!!!
Chadtoss Psistormcock
>Your warriors have engaged the enemy.
>>716084416I did play a good amount of Madness maps. The one I ended up gravitating towards the most was Golems since there were a lot of interesting things to do with currency combos, and Hydra Rancher type games were pretty fun too.
>>716084136dunno, og proportions were a bit goofy at times so it didn't seem all that wrong for something like picrel to be even bigger than usual, on top of being at a weird angle due to having only one ear covered
>>715998738Yeah, zerglings chewing at your depo with adrenal glands in sc2 sound like a group of chihuahuas throwing tomatoes at you. Sc1 zerglings with adrenal glands chewing your depo sound like you are about to get your shit pushed in. All the zerg units have a personality even if they are just grunting. Amazing sound design
>>716044445Did they downgrade to live2d for this? The entire point of the portraits was supposed to be prerendered 3d models.
>>716054113I think the female ghosts have better equipment....
>>716084932They've published a 2K version of the new Wraith portrait somewhere, and you can see they painted over the old one.
>>716081317This is one of the few places on the internet where most people agree the old graphics look better, let us have this.
>>716027347turn your head and cough
>>716065435I'll say it: RTS never should have moved beyond sprites and voxels.
>>716067958>Order Jimmy to gun down civiliansOh YEAAAH !!!
What was his problem?
>>716085356Things were better when I had no idea what the fuck I was looking at and my mind filled in the blanks.
>>716085432>play Terran campaign>get to Installation mission>it's mostly just Raynor and his crew slaughtering literal civilians and SCVs with no comment
Remember those murder mystery custom maps where one person controlled a dark Templar and you were like in a school setting. That was the original among us
>>716085630Yes, Who Is The Killer maps, which there were a ton of, all themed for whatever the mapmaker felt like. Maybe you played a DBZ themed one, maybe you played a FF7 themed one.
>>716085617Installation Mission
>Slaughter CiviliansNext Mission
>Assassinate leaders, start civil warNext Mission
>Call the Zerg to slaughter the planetNext Mission
>Destroy planet's defenses... so you can use Zerg againNext Mission
>Kill Protoss trying to stop you from using Zerg on Civilians...Are we the baddies?
>>716085630I only played the WC3 Version: Murder at the Mansion, loved the ost for that, couldn't remember what the song was form though.
>>716085717Also in that vein were the Hostage Negotiation maps that got popular after 9/11 where there'd be a SWAT side, a terrorist side and hostages. The terrorists would trade hostages to the SWAT to try to get strong enough to win, there were a bunch of things to do in the terrorist base for hostages, people got pretty creative. And most games were shit but the fun ones were really fun.
>>716085630The The Thing ones were even closer, where everyone was a civilian and one person could change their unit into a zergling and back to normal. Usually on either the installation or outdoor snow tileset, with triggers spaced around that would activate turrets or traps or whatever.
So we all agree that the Alpha Sqaudron Lieutenant you play as in the Demo Campaign is obviously Duran right?
>>716085992I remember both of those maps. The one on the installation tileset was less in-depth and more like the Who Is The Killer maps. The one on the snow tileset was really good. It was one of the first types of adventure maps where you ran around picking items up to use and managing resources with a long-term goal of completing a bunch of stuff on the map, while one player was The Thing running around trying to kill everybody. That map is probably one of the greatest Starcraft maps ever made, it's a shame I haven't seen it hosted in 20 years.
>>716041926>Lets not even start on shit like protoss voicesbtw did you know protoss were egyptian? forget about uncanny cute duck faced aliens and just think EGYPTIAN
>>716085991I'm surprised more Indies didn't just copy more SC/WC3 maps for game ideas, considering games like "dig a hole" with basic graphics can make money, you'd think a party game like hostage exchange would be perfect streamer bait.
>>716054113>it's trueHOLY FUCK
>>716086305Quite a few did, really, or turned them into Flash games at the time, which had its own ecosystem. And a surprising amount of standalone games today came from WC3 maps, mostly tower defense games but still cool.
>>716060124Legacy of the Void intro is kino. The story is shit. But the intro is kino.
WoL campaign is one of the best rts campaigns ever and the best SC campaign by a mile
>>716085630Not those, but I remember a ton of other custom maps. The golden era, all the fun shit people made.
>>716045623This one is literally just someoneโs fanart of their 40k figure.
>Panzer_Kavalier map
Oh yeah, it's gaming time.
>>716044038The aesthetics of the Terran and Zerg aren't much better.
I mean, Tychus is cool but Terrans became too clean, too neat.
Zerg just stopped being scary.
>>715996721mass BCs = instant win
>>716086183God it's been so long I forgot how good the outdoor one was. You'd go and pick up some explosives in a corner of the map to come back and open a door with weapons inside to fight back against the Thing, right? And there was a flamethrower somewhere that'd let you be a firebat?
>>716054819sex with probes
>>716086570I miss the Samwise/Metzen era of character art for Warcraft and Starcraft. I think that translated into early 3d programs was peak style.
>>716044668>>716044772In the developer commentary on the dvd, apparently the devs hated the animation test dance so much that they put the guy into the cutscene just so that the Dragoons could murder him.
Broodwar's final cinematic was also apparently just every animator doing their own thing and getting their stuff put together as a collage for a big send off to starcraft.
>>716086845Yeah man. If my 20 year old memory serves there was a section that was exploding that you had to cut the power to. And if I remember right the survival mechanic was Heat, so you needed enough supplies after cutting the power to survive in cold conditions for a while. It was a hell of a fucking map.
>>716015291*Mostly* right. High templars and ghosts took a hit to the soul, and some of the protoss feel a bit more generic because Blizzard wanted them to look more cohesive. It's like a 95% affair
>>716016151Not if you push out yourself (without cheats). It's a tight race to destroy everything before the countdown's over
>>716087131I used Black Sheep Wall to make sure I destroyed everything so I could AFK for the rest of it.
>>716015291first 3 i think are bad
last 4 i think are fine
kerrigan specifically is a huge glowup but i don't like the new outfit as much, i always thought starcraft tech was all jury rigged together and shit, but her new portrait is clean and pristine, she looks as clean as those sc2 LotV robot-toss things w/e the fuck they were called, you know
>>716025221i always get second hand embarrassment when i see people making fun of someone for being a retard, but they're such a drooling mongoloid they're recording a video

>>716067958back in the day, in my eyes, Raynor looked something like picrel, Starcraft II Raynor was unrecognizable for me given this.. Still happens with remastered raynor btw
>>716016438I wanted to like SC2. I really didn't. But you can't recreate Starcraft. It's lightning in a bottle. They didn't set out to make a fun game with SC2. They wanted to make an e-sport from the get-go and that fucked up everything. They took the story in the most awful, generic direction possible. The artsyle is worse. They took out everything that made it unique in favor of big blocky colorful shapes. And on top of all, they pre-annonounced two expansions and still couldn't save this mess.
>>716090461>It's lightning in a bottle. It's true. If you read interviews with the developers, they'll say the exact same shit. They slammed hacky solutions after hacky solutions and the final result was a game with so much more depth than they ever could have even dreamed of intentionally making.
Why do people pretend like brood war is balanced in anyway? It's only technically so at very very very high level because there it just becomes a hand diff issue with how hard it is to control units. But from beginner until semi pro level the game is just kind of a mess.
>>716091037There are tons of imbalances on a match-up basis, every match-up is imbalanced, in PvZ, P has to win on timing attacks or they lose most of the time, in TvZ, T has to win on timing attacks or they lose most of the time, in TvP, T has to win on timing attacks or they lose most of the time. Statistically you're absolutely right. The only argument is all of that is framed in the context of one of the hardest games there is to play, so the better player usually wins anyway, and there are also plenty of stats to back that up.
>>716091379z is simply the best race, this isn't unfair, it's just nature running its course
>>716091649Soulkey recently sure makes me think that. This man is doing early-game all-ins where if he fails it's still an even game.
>>716091649I've been a lover of zerg since I'd watch yellow way back in the day
My favorite zerg is Savior. The man basically invented 3 Hatch play.
>>716091836everyone's pretty much always said zerg's the best race but the apm requirement on the players is just way too high for most players to be able to keep up at end game
when are we getting 12,000 apm robots doing an all races tourney so we can put the subject to rest for good
Sc2 was basically all i played for the last 10+ years because I only had a macbook pro. I had a lot of fun but I just built a nice new pc and I am happy to be free...
>>716016151>Cheatsyou didn't beat the game
>>716092785I'm laughing every time I get a reply to this post so I'll consider my own game won here.
>>716016151This mission filtered me as a 9yo kid
>>716092970Me too. Most of the campaign missions did, because I was really bad at multitasking and macro. I did like the missions where got units ahead of time and played those enough to beat them without cheats. I was a shitter that just played UMS and couldn't play the actual game at all for a while, but I did learn a bit eventually.
I havent played starcraft in years but I keep up with the tourneys just because artosis casts them so I just watch him commentate them :D
I love him always seething about protoss even when casting
What's your favorite arcade game?
For me, it's direct strike
For me, it's Terran Theme 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD4GbGmvNRc
>that Diablo 1 sounding part that begins at 3:10
>>716016151I remember watching my dad play this mission back in 1998. He was deciding on where to place the machine shop add-on and when he picked a spot was like wait.. who's going to go build it? The FACTORY?! - as we noticed and watched in amazement the factory flying over to the spot. Didn't even know buildings could lift off until then
>>716093248I always loved Sand Castle Wars which is the first map I can remember playing like this. Desert Strike Night on Brood War was a popular variant made shortly before Starcraft 2 was released, that one is my favorite of that type of map. My favorite overall is the detailed strategy maps with unit spawns and bases and two teams against each other, but the problem with those games has always been needing too many good players for a map to function properly in a small community. They're often 6-8 player maps where every player needs to know what they're doing so it's hard to get a game going well and egos get bruised easily.
>>716093202tastosis is still goated
that said their coverage of the tournaments post artosis moving feels like it's a lot more analytical and nostalgic, maybe it's a side effect of being on literal opposite ends of the earth, ping-wise, but it feels like it's missing out on a lot of the silly banter they had in person. maybe that's just me
>>716093536naw it's not just you. there's definitely a difference between them sitting next to each other and them stream casting
>>716093815Their casts are a lot worse now and it's exactly because of the latency. They have to pause after they say everything to make sure they're not overtalking each other. They've linked up occasionally since Artosis moved and live cast difference is night and day. You just can't banter the same way.
>>716016151>CheatsHoly sovl
>>716024792I realized that overlord is just an oversized fly
Pesteling gf. Yay or nay?
>>716010798>hisI don't remember him taking out his wallet and paying 75 minerals for his shitty bike
>>716015686>Terran Dominion proved much more stronger than Earth>UED literally wiped the floor with the Arcuckrus and his cronies, and would've been executed if not for BASEDnor and the protoss saving their asses>UED mind rapes and sissifies the overmind>Leaves the protoss alone, they don't matter in the grand schemes of things orchestrated by the UED>Protoss niggers united with the consort of the zergs and Raynor's chimps to btfo together the UED
>>716084075I never picked up on the implication they lured Zerg to the colony. "Dissecting a dead Zerg in a lab is one thing, but unleashing them on men is another." That intro though is right out of Apocalypse Now with the bridge and Christmas lights, complete with a PTSD'd dude whose good with a grenade launcher.
>>715996423he's trying to get on your nerves by misgendering you
>>716093512for me, it's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ve6RdW8qjTw
>>716086978The Ascension was extremely kino. Down to the last detail of Brood War Aria's leitmotif playing with the marine from the intro looking up at the Alexander where DuGalle and Stukov watched the colonial militia die to the Zerg. Also the marine dropping his gauss rifle and embracing the nuke explosion is a timeless pose in media when a dude knows he's about to be obliterated. The dark mood of it was pure unfiltered Starcraft.
>>716076649Blizzard had an obsession with minor factions and heraldry in Warcraft 2 and Starcraft. There was a noticeable decline in interest starting in Warcraft 3's human campaign, where Arthas and co. are blue instead of Lordaeron's white color from 2.
>>716067958A lot of the missions in 1 are tutorials, Brood War is when they will start to challenge your skills a bit more, but are very beatable.
>>716098990>His wife for hire
>>716077262>Rock and roll!
I remember a long ass time ago reading the star craft wikia and looking at the magistrate page in particular (I think) and it had a manga panel of a bunch of anime girls in a pool. The subtext for the image was like "family members of the magistrate gather at a summer party" and it was a surreal feel knowing ywn be a pool party with qt southern accent anime girls and just chilling in the summer
>>716098895Also liked how they treated you as a character in the game for a little while.
