I consider 15 to be variable since it is the end of middle school, start of high school (in Japan). At that point I base it on vibes if the boy is still a middle schooler (or equivalent in fantasy settings). I think that Rex is definitely shota-coded and forms a young adolescents trio with Nia and Tora. To give a counter example, Naruto in Part 2 starts as 15 but gradually ages to 17 over the course of Part 2 (the battle against Obito, Madara, and Kaguya occurs on the eve of his 17th birthday). Given how his design doesn't change during Part 2, I consider that to the equivalent of Naruto's high school years.
